Statement
What we call the beginning is often the end
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
The end is where we start from.
...
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
Through the unknown, unremembered gate
When the last of earth left to discover
Is that which was the beginning.
T.S. Eliot "Little Gidding"
End of the Beginning garden is all the quirky, eclectic, whimsical, joyful notions we have mustered and cobbled together in one woodland place in Pennsylvania. For some sixteen or so years, our home and gardens have been invented and reinvented - ever emerging, ever evolving- it is all about blending art and craft with nature, integrating what is magnificently artificial with what is always spectacularly natural.
Sometimes it is about tweaking and rearranging natural things in an artful way (i.e., garden design, landscaping, and hardscaping). Then it might be about the Garden Angel pulling only some of the vines away from trees and twisting them to make something artful. Sometimes it is about melting a structure into its surroundings as if it grew from the garden. Then it is moving a heavy sculpture two or three times before it is right. Then we move the sculpture again, on another day, to a better right spot...or worse. Sometimes it is about showing an artist a woodland place and having the artist respond to it by creating for the space with masses of artistic license and freedom.
It is always about giving people a chance to be creative, having respect for individual gifts - encouraging, nudging, and considering- this garden place is forever at the End of the Beginning.
The art is trying to take over - it couldn't help itself - like magnificent weeds. Even a garage is a gallery in the End of the Beginning Garden.
Please enjoy your cyber journey through our garden and come back again!
